CAMDEN, NJ. Following a 2010 market and demand study by The Scion Group, The Michaels Organization was joined today by city, county, state and university officials in downtown Camden to celebrate the grand opening of the first new student housing facility at Rutgers University-Camden in 25 years. The striking new addition to Camden’s downtown, a 12-story, 102-unit apartment facility designed for 350 graduate students, is adjacent to the Rutgers campus and was developed for the university by The Michaels Organization in partnership with the Camden County Improvement Authority.
The Michaels Development Company engaged Scion in 2010 to study the housing market serving Rutgers-Camden and to analyze demand for the new project. Scion’s research included interviews with administrators of Rutgers-Camden and of other local schools, on-campus student focus group sessions and examination of the off-campus student rental market. Scion also administered a comprehensive online survey to Rutgers-Camden students and quantified student demand for the project.
Scion was very familiar with Camden, having first worked on campus in 2004 when it advised Rutgers University on the creation of a long-term housing plan and conducted a feasibility analysis for new housing on or near the Camden campus. Again in 2005, the University engaged Scion to create a program and business plan for a new upper-class and graduate student housing facility. Scion has also consulted frequently regarding housing on other New Jersey campuses, including in Newark, Glassboro, Piscataway and New Brunswick.
Founded in 1766, Rutgers is the State University of New Jersey and enrolls over 58,000 students on its campuses in Camden, Newark and New Brunswick/Piscataway. The Camden campus enrolls over 6,400 students, including nearly 2,000 graduate students.
